What to Expect at Your First Ultrasound Scan
From 6 Weeks – Early Pregnancy Reassurance in Barnstaple
If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant—congratulations!
You might be feeling a mix of joy, nerves, and a thousand questions.
One of the first big steps on your pregnancy journey is your first ultrasound scan. But what does it actually involve? When should you have it? And what can you expect on the day?
This guide answers all of those questions and more, based on the experiences of hundreds of women we’ve supported at Sneak-A-Peek Ultrasound in Barnstaple, North Devon.
When Can You Have Your First Scan?
At Sneak-A-Peek, we offer early pregnancy scans from 6 weeks—counting from the first day of your last period.
That’s earlier than the NHS dating scan, which usually happens around 12 weeks. Many expectant parents choose to have a private early scan to confirm the pregnancy, check baby’s development, and get reassurance before the first NHS appointment.
Why Book an Early Pregnancy Scan?
The first scan can offer:
- Confirmation of pregnancy with visual and audible heartbeat (if visible)
- Dating of pregnancy (how many weeks pregnant you are)
- Reassurance after IVF, loss, or bleeding
- Twin detection, if more than one sac or embryo is visible
- Peace of mind during the long wait for the 12-week scan

What Happens During the Scan?
Here’s what to expect when you arrive at our Barnstaple clinic:
👩⚕️ Warm Welcome and Check-In
You’ll be welcomed by Maria, our lead sonographer—an experienced NHS-trained obstetric sonographer and mum of two. She’ll explain what the scan involves and ask a few quick questions about your cycle or pregnancy so far.
🖥️ The Scan
- Ultrasound Type: Most early scans are transabdominal, but in some cases (especially under 7 weeks), a transvaginal scan may be recommended to get clearer images.
- What We Look For:
- Presence of the gestational sac
- Yolk sac and fetal pole
- Fetal heartbeat (if visible)
- Measurements to estimate how far along you are
Maria will explain what you’re seeing step-by-step, and you can ask questions at any point.
📷 Images to Take Home
You’ll receive printed images—and you can add digital copies to keep or share with loved ones.
How You Might Feel
Many parents feel nervous—especially if they’ve had a previous loss or long journey to get here. That’s completely normal.
We aim to make your experience:
- Calm and unhurried
- Warm and compassionate
- Guided by what you need
You’re welcome to bring a partner or support person. And if you’re unsure whether you want to see or hear everything right away, just let Maria know. The scan is for you—not just your records.
What If Something Unexpected Is Seen?
Most early scans are reassuring—but if we spot something that’s unclear or needs monitoring, Maria will talk you through it gently and clearly.
We’ll always give you space, explain what we do know, and help you understand next steps.
Still Have Questions?
If you’re unsure whether to book—or just want to talk it through—we offer a no-pressure Scan Clarity Call. It’s a short one-to-one call with Maria where you can ask anything on your mind. Or consider reading our pregnancy scan FAQs.
