What is a gender scan?
A gender scan (also known as a gender reveal ultrasound or sexing scan) is a non-invasive ultrasound that identifies your baby’s sex from 16 weeks of pregnancy onwards.
Your 45-minute scan includes:
- A check on baby’s heartbeat and movement
- A listen to your baby's heartbeat (probably for the first time in your pregnancy)
- Gender identification (with your choice to be told or keep it a surprise for later)
- Printed 2D images to take home
- A warm, personal experience with time to ask questions
This scan is perfect for parents who want to know their baby’s gender for planning, bonding, or celebrating with family and friends.
When can I find out my baby's gender?
We can determine your baby’s gender from 16 weeks with high accuracy. If your baby is not in a good position on the day, we’ll offer you a free rescan as soon as possible – your peace of mind is our priority.
What will the scan show?
Alongside finding out your baby’s gender, you’ll also get to see:
- Baby’s position, movement, and heartbeat
- Clear 2D images to take home
- Baby wriggling or stretching (if they’re in the mood!)
This is a bonding experience that gives you a sneak peek into your baby’s world before birth.
Can I bring guests or children?
Yes! You’re welcome to bring up to 5 guests, including children. We aim to make the experience fun and memorable for families.

How accurate is it?
Our gender scans in Barnstaple are performed by an experienced NHS-trained sonographer, Maria Birch, using high-resolution equipment. This allows us to:
- Deliver accurate results from 16 weeks
- Confirm gender only when we’re confident
- Offer a free rescan if the view is unclear
Our focus is on clarity, honesty, and care—you’ll never be rushed or left uncertain.
Want to keep it a surprise?
We completely understand! If you're planning a gender reveal party or want to wait for a special moment, we’ll:
- Write the gender result on paper
- Seal it in an envelope
- Hand it to you discreetly after the scan
Just let us know your preference beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
What if the baby isn’t in the right position?
Don’t worry. We’ll give you time, ask you to move around if needed, and if we still can’t get a clear view, we’ll offer a free rescan within a week.
Can I have a gender scan with twins?
Yes. We can usually determine the gender of both babies from 16 weeks, the same as with a singleton pregnancy.
Do I need a full bladder?
At 16+ weeks, a bursting full bladder is not required, but being hydrated and not completely empty helps.
Can I bring my other child?
Yes! We’re a family-friendly clinic and children are welcome.
What parents say
“
We weren't sure whether to find out gender
But I'm happy that we did. Knowing that my baby is all healthy is the main thing because it put my mind at ease. Maria was excellent and I felt at ease talking to her. She was lovely and really made the experience.

I've never had a private scan before and wondered whether it would be worth it
I am on my third and last baby and if that wasn't the case I would be booking this scan for any new pregnancies I might have had. It was the best decision in all 3 pregnancies that I have made.
I just liked the in-depth understanding of the anatomy of the baby. It's so interesting and a real relief to understand what you are seeing on the screen.
We got to see that the baby was forming and growing well and how he should be. We found out the gender (a new thing for us) which will make my organising everything a lot easier.
Maria was exactly how and who you'd want her to be. I felt so at ease and so comfortable around her. The environment was calm and relaxing but not too quiet that you felt you couldn't speak. The perfect balance.

We didn't want to find out the gender in a hospital environment
When we decided we wanted to find out baby's gender, we knew we wanted to do it in that environment rather than in a hospital scan.
My partner and I found it to be a much better experience having the scan with Maria versus going to the hospital. It is so much more relaxed, calm and personalised.
We love how Maria talks us through every step, what she is doing, what she is looking for and why as well as giving us time to process. It makes the process much less anxiety-provoking and much more enjoyable.
We feel so much more connected to our little one after our scan. Being able to relax and enjoy the scan was a huge benefit on its own, while also being able to walk away with lots of pictures and videos of our little one which has helped us connect so much more.
I would recommend Sneak-A-Peek Ultrasound a million times over. This was our second scan with Maria and when we will hopefully be back with baby number 2!

The price might have prevented me from booking
But Maria made the scan incredibly special for us. It really felt like she cared about our experience and she took the time to explain everything in detail. Finding out the gender was amazing too, and we're really glad we found out there and then as she was able to explain exactly what we were looking at. NHS scans are great but you don't get the personal experience that a private scan provides, and you have so much more time to ask questions, hear the heartbeat, get lots of photos and videos, etc. A huge thank you to Maria for her excellent communication before, during and after the scan. We absolutely loved every second and are so pleased we decided to have the scan. It was worth every single penny.

Why some gender scans go wrong
Ultrasound scans are not 100% accurate.
However most mistakes occur because the scan (and the reveal) was rushed.
Baby's aren't always in a good enough position to see their "bits" clearly.
So, it can take a while to be sure.
Which can only happen if there's time to persevere.
That's why, unlike any other, you get a 45-minute appointment with a gender scan in Barnstaple at Sneak-A-Peek Ultrasound.
That’s 2-3 times longer than most...
Plenty of time to check, double-check and triple-check your baby’s gender.
If they’re not in a good position, there’s time to try a few tricks of the trade.
First, I’ll ask you to jiggle around the room for a while. If that doesn’t work, I’ll invite you to go for a walk and come back in 5 or 10 minutes. Then, if your baby is still not in a good position, I’ll ask you to consume something sugary (there are sweets on tap!)
Because there's so much time to persevere, there's yet to be a case where I've had to bring someone back for another scan to determine gender. But if that's necessary to give you an accurate gender assessment, I'll invite you back for another scan free of charge. I'll even endeavour to make time the same day so it doesn't spoil any reveal party plans you might have.
"Maria was super thorough and made sure she was 100% certain before revealing the gender to us. We have the whole scan on USB to share with friends and family as well as a fridge magnet to put a scan photo in. It was the best experience ever and we have been to other private scans before." - Kira Warner
